In 2005 a group of candidates led by local architects and builders were elected into office by a small minority of unsuspecting Letchworth residents. Because they had experienced personal and business difficulties with Letchworth's planning restrictions their aim was to gain personal control over the planning process. So far the councillors have been completely ineffectual, having wasted £390,000 of your tax money.

This year the Letchworth Garden City Councillors have decided to use £600,000 of your tax money. Whereas Herts County Council will have increased their part of your council tax by about 4% (at the rate of inflation), the LGCC part of your council tax has increased by an unprecedented 206.7%. These percentage increases are shown on your Council Tax bill which arrived in March.

Many Letchworth residents have suggested that the Town Council should be abolished because it is now costly as well as ineffectual. Indeed, already the Comet newspaper reports that residents have voted to have a referendum on abolishing the Town Council on April 21st 2008.
